- A seasonal round-up (usually toward the beginning of the month)
- Posts where I share what I have been up to with my early elementary children (including occasional highlight posts where I share how we used ideas that have been linked up here on Littles Learning Link Up).
Each week, I will host a link up, where you can share either what you have been up to recently, or old posts that may go with the theme. Feel free to link up more than one post.
Each week I will continue to feature a couple of posts from those that have been linked up.
I hope you will continue to share your wonderful posts, and I hope you will find something new to try with your child(ren).
It would be great for everyone to stop by and visit the other linked-up posts as well. Check them out, leave some comments, pin those that interest you. Let's make this a real party and socialize with each other.
What have we been up to?
Let's take a look at that review schedule real quick:
Last week I shared my reviews for GrammarPlanet and Reading Eggspress from Reading Eggs. This week I will be posting my reviews of PictaDicta from Roman Roads Media and the two Kingdom Files books from Barbour Publishing. Later in the month you will find my reviews for the Captain Sun book, and the math website called I Know It., plus the newest release from Heirloom Audio Productions, St. Bartholomew's Eve. Then in October I will share about the book called Forensic Faith For Kids which sounds like it will be interesting to read and work through.

What have we been up to?
We are slowly getting used to our new routine. I've definitely had to remain flexible, and have had to switch our schedule around a bit a couple of days so far. But I still love being able to go to the Y in the mornings and count it as P.E. time for the older girls, while the younger children are allowed to get on the computer in the child watch to do a little math. Then we come home, have lunch and get ready for an afternoon of learning. Of course, on days when I have to work on writing reviews, I have had to fanangle the schedule to make it work.
Anyway, we have started our study of Ancient Rome. We've learned a bit about how children learned in Ancient Rome, and looked at the growth of the Roman Empire. We briefly talked about such people as Hannibal and Julius Caesar. One of our main books this first part of the school year is called Augustus Caesar's World by Genevieve Foster. We started it yesterday, learning how he used to be named Octavius and looked up to his great uncle Julius Caesar. I'm quite intrigued by what all we will be learning through this book this year. Additionally we are still using Streams of Civilization, which gives a lot of detail. Though I do wonder how much the children are actually retaining. This year I am reading it while the color related sheets, or work on their map work; hoping to shorten the time needed for schooltime. Speaking of mapwork, we have looked at the modern map and discussed which countries would have been a part of the Roman Empire, plus looked at the expansion during the time of the Punic Wars.
All I have to say is, I have been learning an awful lot, and I am loving it.
The children loved learning the legend of the founding of Rome, the story of Romulus and Remus. They were to draw a picture and narrate what they remembered.
They were quite intrigued to realize that Professor Remus Lupin from Harry Potter had a name that was related to the wolf, seeing as Remus was one of the twins saved and nurtured by a mother wolf, and the word "Lupin" comes from the Latin word lupus which means wolf. In case you don't know the story, and this is a spoiler if you plan to read it, Professor Lupin is a werewolf. So, of course, we had to watch Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on Friday.
We are also learning about Roman Numerals, the history behind them and how to use them to write numbers. So, history and math right there.
We also have been reading the book, How the Bible Came to Us by Meryl Doney.
For science we started learning about the human body, the building blocks specifically. The children worked on cell models yesterday, both diagrams and edible samples.
I asked them to draw a cell and label it, plus they were to define "cell membrane," "cytoplasm," and "nucleus."
We then represented those three parts in our edible model, in addition to some mitochondria and lysosomes.
We used a plastic zippy bag for the cell membrane, jello for the cytoplasm, a grape for the nucleus, raisins for the mitochondria, and peanuts for the lysosomes. We would have done more, but that was all I could scrounge up in the kitchen.

Looks like so much fun - and so educational at the same time! The cells are so cool - I remember making something similar when I was in school.
