Toddler Ideas Tuesday: April 22nd, 2014

Welcome back to Toddler Idea Tuesdays! Have you been busy with your young children?

Last week was our last week using the My Father's World Kindergarten level. Our topic was Y:Yellow, focusing on how God made all things beautiful and all the colors. While we had focused on colors while we were doing our V:Vegetables unit last month (because of it falling around St. Patrick's Day) we still had some fun with colors with Y. The girls (including Hannah) really know all of their colors, so I figured we could work together to help Harold learn them by having a Color Scavenger Hunt.

I wrote the colors on separate index cards in black, as I wanted to see if Tabitha and Amelia could actually read the words, which they can. I showed one at a time and they needed to look around the house and bring back something of that color. They were supposed to work in pairs, but Hannah decided to work on her own, so Tabitha just helped Harold.

Now onto:

Toddler Idea Tuesday Features

1- Shecki from Greatly Blessed shared some great ideas on keeping little ones busy while you are homeschooling the older children. She listed Free and Cheap ideas, plus really cool Math Manipulatives, plus some ideas that would work inside or outside.

2- Jennifer from Hint Mama shared a Very Easy Toddler Activity (also guaranteed to keep younger ones busy while homeschooling older ones, it seems). Do you have cardboard boxes lying around your home? They would make great "Think Boxes" with some crayons and/or markers.

3- Lisa from Our Country Road shared her No Theme Preschool Week.  I really enjoyed her idea of using knobless cylinders to create flowers, plus she shared a link to a Bulb Ordering printable.

What sort of activities do you do with your toddler? Do you have some favorite activities you would like to share? I invite you to link up below. I will be pinning posts on my Toddler Ideas board and I would love to feature some of the activities each week from what is linked up. Please know I may share a picture from your post and link back to it, along with sharing how we used your idea in our toddler time. By linking up you are giving me permission to use a picture from your post. I will ALWAYS give credit and link back. Additionally, if you choose to try out any of the ideas with your toddler, please make sure you give credit where credit is due.

Wordless Wednesday: December 18, 2013 (w/linky)- Christmas Lights Scavenger Hunt

I found this list over at Family Friendly Frugality and thought it would be fun to use when we went out to look at the Christmas lights. The girls had fun helping find all the different decorations.

A House with Just White Christmas Lights (well, 3 houses)

A Penguin

(In case you can't see it, there are two penguins riding on the polar bear.)

Disney Character (Mickey Mouse)

More than 3 Inflatables in One Yard
(This house was amazing. Lots of inflatables, plus I found quite a few of the other decorations here.)

Snoopy

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

A Decorated Mailbox

(Technically, a mailbox that is a decoration, but it is the best I could come up with)

A Nativity Scene

(One by a house)

(And a couple in front of two different churches)

An Angel

The Word NOEL

Candy Canes

5+ Reindeer in One Yard

(The most I could find was 4 in one yard)

(Two on one side)

(And two on the other)

A House with Blinking Colored Lights

(These lights blink in synchronization to the music played over the radio station the owners have you tune to.)

A Snowman

(I actually took this one because I love the lights shining through the snow on the top of the bushes. Conveniently there was a snowman in the same yard.)

A Camel

We didn't see the Grinch anywhere, but I was surprised I couldn't find the Christmas Train. For years there has been a little train car decoration at this one house that has Rudolph popping in and out. Not sure if I could find it during the day or if they aren't putting it up, or maybe they don't live there anymore, but I couldn't find it or any other.

Looking forward to seeing your Wordless (or not so wordless) Wednesday posts this week.

Easter Basket Phonics Hunt

I had this brilliant idea (okay, I think it is a brilliant idea) for a new phonics hunt game. A while back I shared with you our Great Phonics Hunt. The other day I was looking at an Easter basket and thought that the grass would be fun for some sort of sensory activity. But what could I have the girls hunt for. That was when I remembered the Phonics Hunt. This is what I came up with the

Easter Basket Phonics Hunt!!

What do you need for this fun activity?

An Easter Basket filled with grass
12 plastic eggs with letter stickers
12 small objects to represent those 12 beginning sounds

Label the eggs with the letter stickers.

Here is a close up of objects.

I then hid the objects in the grass:

And the girls got to find them.

First I reviewed the letters on the easel, making sure they could tell me the name and the sound. I figured they could, they went beyond what I was asking for by adding a word to go with each sound.  Then I showed them the eggs in the egg carton.

They took turns reaching inside the basket for an object.

They told me what it was.

And found the correct egg to place it in.

After we filled all the eggs the girls put the objects back in and they told me what to find (with my eyes closed). I had to tell them the letter and the sound. I tell you, some of those things are hard to find in that grass, especially when you are searching for a specific one.

The girls seem to think it is a great new activity. The were upset when I had them get out their workbooks because I couldn't keep looking for objects when the baby needed to nurse.
