Unit 7- Uu Us

Words to Remember: God Made Us Wonderful! 

Well, what do you know, I just found another "School Time post that was never published. We were working on our Uu: Us unit way back in February. At this time I was also scheduling in Flowering Baby for Harold and Handwriting Without Tears for Tabitha and Amelia. These 2 curriculum worked in really well with our Uu: Us unit. 

We were learning all about our senses that God gave us in this unit. 

We started the first week with a Touch Muffin Tin.

And we used some sticky tape to count fingers.

Then the girls colored their U pictures.

And cut them out.

The girls also do a handwriting sheet. Hannah gets to join in with a handwriting sheet where the letters are big enough for her to trace. And she gets to circle the letters in the box at the top of the page. 

Hannah is getting really good at tracing letters.

When we learned about the sense of hearing, the children had a blast playing drums and having a parade around the dining room table. Harold had a blast playing the drums too.

We also worked on following the beat.

Oh, right, we were also doing our review of Artistic Pursuits: The Way They See It. A great way to use our sense of sight. The first project we did was a drawing of an arrangement of flowers.

We had fun building Mat Man with Handwriting Without Tears. A great way to reinforce that God made every part of us wonderful.

And this flowed right into making Heart People for Valentine's Day.

We also had a Taste Muffin Tin.

The girls were not too fond of the sour lemon.

For our Sense of Taste we also did a taste test. I put a little something in a jar for each of the different tastes (sweet, sour, salty, and bitter) and had the girls try to figure out what it was. 

Our sense of Smell lesson also went well with Flowering Baby. I was supposed to find items for him to smell. Some were to be edible, the others were to be non-edible. The girls had fun closing their eyes and trying to guess what the smells were.

We worked on the project page for Hannah's H book. All three girls wanted to make an "This is Us, Under the Umbrella" picture.

We concluded our "Us" unit with life size drawings of the girls.

School Time Week 38: Some more U (when we had a chance)

In addition to the summer reading programs we are participating in, we tried to get some U activities done this week.  I didn't get any of the reading or worksheet ideas done or our Interlock done.  Summer is definitely not going as planned, but I am not worried.  We got done, what we got done.

Of course we started with our Muffin Tin: Underneath

Then on Wednesday we played our Under game.  I created an obstacle course for the girls to roll a ball under.

Under the dining room table and into the box.

I timed the girls.  Tabitha took 24 seconds.  Amelia took 44 seconds.  And Hannah got stuck at the tunnel.  We kept rolling the ball back and forth under the cushions.

Two times this week we played our new math game.  I called it, "Adding Up the Steps."  

I wrote one number 1-16 on half a sheet of paper and placed them on the stairs.

Then I made some cards depicting the number we were to add.  +1, +2 and +3 cards.  These were made on 1/4 of a sheet of construction paper.

The girls took turns picking one card.  

I put the equations on the easel.  The both started on 0 of course (the floor) and they had to climb the number of steps shown on the card they picked.  Then they told me what number step they were on.  I then said and finished the equation.

After they both took a turn, I erased the equations, replacing the first numbers with the steps they were now on.

We continued this way all the way up the steps.

They had to draw the exact number to reach 16 because other wise they would have had to climb higher which they obviously couldn't do.

Amelia scooted down the steps, counting backwards as she went.

These numbers have been on our steps since Wednesday (we played the game twice this week).  When Amelia climbs the stairs she has been counting, which we have done since she was born. But now she sees the numbers and is definitely getting the connection.  Plus she is starting to get the numbers past 10 correct.  I figure we will use this for subtraction as well.  They definitely enjoy counting backward on the way down. 

Hannah is having fun sneaking up the steps and messing up the numbers, scrunching them, throwing them down.  I have had Tabitha fix the numbers at least once.  It helped her work on getting the numbers in order.
