School Time With My Father's World : Unit 7- Uu Us

Unit 7- Uu Us

Words to Remember: God Made Us Wonderful!

Well, what do you know, I just found another "School Time post that was never published. We were working on our Uu: Us unit way back in February. At this time I was also scheduling in Flowering Baby for Harold and Handwriting Without Tears for Tabitha and Amelia. These 2 curriculum worked in really well with our Uu: Us unit.

We were learning all about our senses that God gave us in this unit.

We started the first week with a Touch Muffin Tin.

And we used some sticky tape to count fingers.

Then the girls colored their U pictures.

And cut them out.

The girls also do a handwriting sheet. Hannah gets to join in with a handwriting sheet where the letters are big enough for her to trace. And she gets to circle the letters in the box at the top of the page.

Hannah is getting really good at tracing letters.

When we learned about the sense of hearing, the children had a blast playing drums and having a parade around the dining room table. Harold had a blast playing the drums too.

We also worked on following the beat.

Oh, right, we were also doing our review of Artistic Pursuits: The Way They See It. A great way to use our sense of sight. The first project we did was a drawing of an arrangement of flowers.

We had fun building Mat Man with Handwriting Without Tears. A great way to reinforce that God made every part of us wonderful.

And this flowed right into making Heart People for Valentine's Day.

We also had a Taste Muffin Tin.

The girls were not too fond of the sour lemon.

For our Sense of Taste we also did a taste test. I put a little something in a jar for each of the different tastes (sweet, sour, salty, and bitter) and had the girls try to figure out what it was.

Our sense of Smell lesson also went well with Flowering Baby. I was supposed to find items for him to smell. Some were to be edible, the others were to be non-edible. The girls had fun closing their eyes and trying to guess what the smells were.

We worked on the project page for Hannah's H book. All three girls wanted to make an "This is Us, Under the Umbrella" picture.

We concluded our "Us" unit with life size drawings of the girls.

Five on Friday: April 27, 2013 (on Saturday)

I can not believe I forgot to post a Random 5 on Friday Post for the last two weeks. It completely slipped my mind. As I really do like this idea, I hope to do better going forward. Though I am going to make these a bit brief this week.

1- We watched The Little Mermaid last night for movie and popcorn night. This was the first time I have seen it in years. I really do miss these great kind of Disney movies.

2- I forgot to make the popcorn for our movie and popcorn night. Oops. The children didn't notice until the movie was over (I had noticed a slight bit earlier) and then it was too late to make it.

3- I am actually glad I didn't make the popcorn because I would have been tempted to eat it (I always give into that temptation). Giving in and eating the popcorn would not have helped my weight loss attempts.

4- I haven't stuck to my exercise/diet goals this week at all. Hoping for a better week next week.

5- On a positive note, I did get my review up on time for Dr. Craft's Active Play! book. I wasn't sure if I was going to because our electricity went out two nights before when I had planned on writing it. I ended up having to write it after we got home from the Draft Day Party (after midnight). I will be sharing more from the Draft Day Party (the children's and my first one) for Wordless Wednesday.

Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen #43: Ocean Pudding Pie

We finished our Oo: Octopus unit last week and started our Ww: Water unit this week. So I decided to make a Octopus in the Ocean Pudding Pie.

There wasn't anything really special about the pudding pie. We followed the directions we use every time I make a pudding pie. However, I found White Chocolate instant pudding mix. I knew using vanilla wouldn't work because it is actually yellow. I figured adding blue food coloring to vanilla pudding would just give us greenish pudding, not a nice blue ocean.

We needed:

A graham cracker pie crust

White chocolate instant pudding

1 1/2 cups milk (probably a little more would be needed if using whole milk. We use skim)

1 banana

1 apple

blue food coloring

The girls needed to smell the pudding first as they had never had this kind before.

Tabitha added the pudding mix.

Hannah poured in the milk.

Amelia helped mix the pudding with the beaters. We added the food coloring too.

Did you know when children don't listen when they are told to put things down they might fall and break?

Well, our pie crust did. I couldn't go get another one, so I just pieced it back together as well as I could.

Doesn't look too bad. I wanted the crust to represent the sandy ocean floor.

Then I cut a piece off of the apple and peeled it (not quite half, I sort of avoided the core). I placed it in the center for the octopus's head. Then I made a couple of tiny holes in the side so I could stick two mini chocolate chips in for eyes. I cut one banana in half and sliced each half lengthwise into four.

Tada, octopus tentacles.
