Littles Learning Link Up: Fishy Under the Sea Literature and Craft Round Up

Welcome to Littles Learning Link Up. Each month you will find:
  • A seasonal round-up (usually toward the beginning of the month)
  • Posts where I share what I have been up to with my preschoolers and/or early elementary children (including occasional highlight posts where I share how we used ideas that have been linked up here on Littles Learning Link Up).
Each week, I will host a link up, where you can share either what you have been up to recently, or old posts that may go with the theme.  Feel free to link up more than one post.

Each week I will continue to feature a couple of posts from those that have been linked up.

I hope you will continue to share your wonderful posts, and I hope you will find something new to try with your child.

It would be great for everyone to stop by and visit the other linked-up posts as well. Check them out, leave some comments, pin those that interest you. Let's make this a real party and socialize with each other.

It's time for this month's Round Up

Recently I have been trying something different for my round up posts. I share a selection of books that focus on a specific topic (like Focusing on the Cross for Resurrection Sunday and Colors & Color Mixing Fun) and then I share a round up of "Favorite Book List" posts that other bloggers have compiled, plus craft/activity posts that went with those books. I have decided I am going to continue this through the year. I hope these posts have helped you find some new books to share with your children. I know they have helped me find books I have never heard of before, and reminded me of books we have read in the past but I had forgotten about.

This month I decided to focus on fish under the sea. We have been reading a variety of books and I am choosing our favorites to share here with you. We are also in the process of creating a diorama type aquarium project using the Rigid Wrap and CelluClay from Activa Products which we are reviewing. I had hoped to be finished, but we sort of took last week completely off, which was unplanned. I will be sharing the progress we have made so far and will share our final project at a later date, in the review if not earlier.

As I've done in the past, after I share my book selections and craft, I will share a list of posts that also focus on fish under the sea.  I hope you find some new books and ideas to share with your children.

Fish Under the Sea Literature and Craft Round Up

There are some wonderful fish under the sea books available. This round up will include books for toddlers/preschoolers, plus those more suited for elementary school children. Some are pure fictional stories, others are still fiction but have an element of fact in them, then there are some great non-fiction books.

Fictional Fishy Tales

We love the Rainbow Fish books by Marcus Pfister.

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister

Rainbow Fish Discovers the Deep Sea by Marcus Pfister

Good Night, Little Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister

Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale by Marcus Pfister

I was recently introduced to the books featuring the Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen.

The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen

The Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark by Deborah Diesen

The Pout-Pout Fish Goes to School by Deborah Diesen

The Pout-Pout Fish Far, Far from Home by Deborah Diesen

And here are some more fishy fiction books.

The Fish Who Cried Wolf by Julia Donaldson. If I am not mistaken, this book is the same one titled Tiddler: The Storytelling Fish that is mentioned below.

The Story of Fish & Snail by Deborah Freedman.

Swimmy by Leo Lionni

This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen

Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea by Jan Peck

FISH by Liam Francis Walsh

Hooray for Fish by Lucy Cousins

The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark by Ken Geist

Fish Eyes: A Book You Can Count On by Lois Ehlert

Then there are the books that are more factual in nature

In One Tidepool: Crabs, Snails and Salty Tails by Anthony D. Fredericks

Flood Fish by Robyn Eversole

My Visit to the Aquarium by Aliki

Starfish by Edith Thacher Hurd

Fishy Tales from DK Readers

Trout, Trout, Trout! (A Fish Chant) by April Pulley Sayre

A Couple of Alphabet Fish Books

A Swim through the Sea by Kristin Joy Pratt

The Underwater Alphabet Book by Jerry Pallotta

A few books about Sea Horses:

Sea Horse: The Shyest Fish in the Sea by Chris Butterworth

Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle

Seahorses by Jennifer Keats Curtis

Some Fishy Under the Sea Poems

Ocean Soup: Tide-Pool Poems by Stephen R. Swinburne

Project Time

We focused on the book: My Visit to the Aquarium by Aliki to make our project.

As I mentioned, we are using the Rigid Wrap and Celluclay from Activa to make our diorama aquarium. There is a page in the book that focuses on Kelp Forests, so that is where our focus is. As I had to make the templates myself to make the fish, I used the simplest fish I discovered lived in kelp forests, the Garibaldi Fish and the Senorita Fish. We are reading information from this site which I found through a Google search of what lives in kelp forests.

The Rigid  Wrap is plaster cloth which has to be moistened in water to use.

When they dried, the children painted them with acrylic paints. And we painted the inside of a cardbox box light blue.

Here is our project so far:

The children still need to add details to their fish and we are going to make something for the aquarium floor plus kelp hanging from the top. Stay tuned for the finished project.

Throwback Thursday Blog-Style #159: July 6, 2017

Welcome back to...

I know, I know, Throwback Thursday seems to be all about sharing pictures from the past, great memories that mean something to you, that you would like to share with others. At least that is how it appears to me. Throwback Thursday wasn't something I was participating in, and then I came up with an idea.

I thought it would be great fun and a help to my blog to share old content, but not just any old content. Each week I will share an old blog post from a previous year, any year, BUT it has to be from the current week (for example, something I've posted around July 6th, from any previous year)  I will go in, edit the post if needed, add a pinnable image if I don't already have one, and share it on Facebook.

Last year I focused solely on recipe posts for the posts I wanted to share, and the year before that, I shared past review posts. It was fun remembering some of the recipes and reviews I had forgotten about. This year I will be sharing random posts.

Would you like to join in? You do not need to edit your past post in any way, you don't need to create a pinnable image, though it couldn't hurt, in fact it will help your blog traffic to add quality pinnable images to your posts.

Just go into your archives, choose a favorite post from this current week from any previous year, and link it up below. (If you don't have anything from this current week, it is still okay to link up with a post from a previous year around this time. And if you haven't been blogging for a full year, feel free to share any earlier post.)

Please make sure to share from the past as instructed above if you would like your post to qualify for the Featured Post. Most weeks I find that there is a wonderful post, but I can't feature it because it is a current post, not from the past. I love reading the current posts, if you want to share them. However, I am not able to feature them, because the spirit of Throwback Thursday Blog-Style is to share posts from the past.
Thank you

I will be pinning posts to my appropriate Pinterest boards and will be randomly selecting a Featured Throwback Thursday post to share next week. Just a note, I will be sharing a picture from your post if you are selected as the featured post, but I will link back to your post. I will ALWAYS give credit and link back. By linking up you are giving me permission to use your picture in the post.

Here is my Throwback Thursday post:

Wordless Wednesday: July 5, 2017 (w/linky) : Rock Climbing Fun

Thought these rocks at the park made a great place for a photo shoot.

Look at them up there at the tippy top!

Though they may not have been up near as high as it seems.

In fact, the rock pile, is nowhere near being high.

Hope nobody thought I was letting them climb up really high rock piles.

Looking forward to seeing your Wordless (or not so wordless) Wednesday posts this week.

No button currently, and there won't be one until I can figure it out seeing as Photobucket has changed things. Feel free to still share the picture in place of the button on your Wordless Wednesday post or in a list of Wordless Wednesday linkies. Just link it to my Wordless Wednesday permalink.

🌟Happy Independence Day🌟

What have we been up to?

We have been enjoying a break. Yes, even me. My paperwork is safely at the school district office, and I don't have to worry about it for another year.

We have been using our review products of course. We have all been learning the Greek letters, just a few at a time to not overwhelm them. I say them, because I do remember most of my Greek letters as I took Greek in high school, but I don't remember any of the language. I am using the R.E.A.D Curriculum Notebook from The Crafty Classroom for Harold, and he is really enjoying it. We received English on a Roll, and I started the lessons with Hannah. We have a fun Memory Deck to play card games with to exercise our brains. Plus we will be getting artsy with the products from ACTIVA. And yesterday, the newest release from Heirloom Audio Productions arrived in our mailbox. We started listening to In the Reign of Terror, which is about the French Revolution.

We will have a summer school session at the end of July and into August, then take another break before starting school in September, like we did last year. I have to schedule this around summer reading programs, camp, and VBS. My plan for the 2 or 3 week summer session is to spend some time doing all the hands-on science observations from the different units that we didn't get to through the school year. And I'm still hoping to fit in a meal from Russia. We will be finishing up ECC with our lessons on Australia.

Let's take a look at that review schedule:

Last week I posted my review for Lightning Literature Grade 3 from Hewitt Homeschooling.
July will bring reviews of the Trust Fund movie from Mapelle Films, Rigid Wrap and CelluClay Quik-Sculpting Kit from ACTIVA Products, the R.E.A.D Curriculum Notebook from The Crafty Classroom, and English on a Roll.
In August I will share my review of Heirloom Audio Productions' In the Reign of Terror, and Hey Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! from Greek 'n' Stuff.

Some things I would like to share with you:

Here are some fun Patriotic ideas:

Are you looking for ways to keep your children busy this summer? Check out my Summer of Fun Round Up:

I will soon be posting my Under the Sea Fishy Fun Literature and Craft Round Up. If you have any posts that you would like included in this round up, please leave me a comment or contact me using the contact info on my About Me page. I am looking for any "Favorite Fish/Under the Sea Books" compilation list posts or crafts/activities/snacks that go with a specific Fish/Under the Sea book, or a post that focuses on just one Fish/Under the Sea Book. Just so long as there is a book involved please.
