Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen #30: Aa-Applesauce Cake

Time for Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen
(A weekly linky where you can share your special time in the kitchen, such a great place for learning. You can also link up Kid-Friendly Recipes)

The linky is at the bottom.

We focused on the letter Aa and Apples for three weeks, though we finished this unit a couple of weeks ago.  For some reason, I never posted this post.
Last time I mentioned a book that we read that had several great looking recipes in the back. It is called Apple Farmer Annie by Monica Wellington. We didn't use the recipe in the book to make applesauce, even though we did make applesauce. Instead, we made Applesauce Cake.

Ingredients (I cheated a bit by taking a picture of the page):

Amelia wanted a turn to help read the recipe. I keep forgetting she is the same age (or older) that Tabitha was when she started doing this.

We started out by creaming the butter and sugar.

Then we added the eggs and beat.

Time to add the flour. The girls love taking a turn to level it.

Then we added the baking soda, salt and spices.

And we added it to the creamed mixture alternately with the applesauce, and mixed and mixed and mixed.

We poured it in the greased pan (we don't have a tube pan, so I just used a square pan) and baked at 375 degrees for 45 minutes.

While it baked the girls got baths. Then they came down and took turns frosting the cake. I made the frosting without their help. I am not sure if this bothered them or not.

They had teeny pieces seeing as it was bed time.

Do you have your children help you in the kitchen?  What lessons do they learn? Do you have any kid friendly recipes to share?

I'd love to see your posts, whether you have done something this week or some time in the past. Just link up below. This is a weekly linky.
