A Celebration of Snowmen

Well, winter is definitely here and making itself known this week. It is -10 degrees here, though the RealFeel on my phone says it feels like -46! Brrr!!! In honor of this lovely snow and cold, I thought I would share a round up of snowman ideas. What you will find here are snacks, activities and crafts that we have done over the past few years. Perhaps you will find something you would like to do with your children to keep them busy while they can't go outside.

(If you click on the links you can find full descriptions/directions for each item.)

Fun meals and snacks

A few years ago I gave the girls a "Make Your Own Snowman" Muffin Tin Meal. They were given the different components in the muffin tin spaces and created cute snowman faces.

The next year I decided to actually make the Snowman Muffin Tin a bit different. I actually made the snowman our of sandwiches and surrounded him with "snow" made from different foods, plus extra carrot noses.

And last year, I decided I really liked the muffin tin from January 2012, so I made a similar one. This is our "Snowman in the Snow" Muffin Tin.

It seems I was feeling quite creative last January. One night for Breakfast for Dinner, I made the children Snowman in the Snow Pancakes using peanut butter pancakes, sausage links for arms, whipped cream for snow and some sweets for buttons, eyes, and a mouth. The nose is just decorative gel. I never really posted about them though, just tacked them on at the end of my School Time Wrap Up post.

While we were in the middle of our snowman theme in 2011, we made these cute "Melting Snowman" cookies that had been floating around the internet. I shared how we made them (plus a link back to where I found them) in my Weekly School Time post.

And last year we made some fun Rice Krispies Treats Snowmen.

Fun Toddler/Preschool Crafts

Four years ago Tabitha and Amelia made these Snowman Families.

The following year we made these Snowy Snowmen Families.

And we also made Shape Snowmen. I have always loved using crafts to help teach shapes!

Snowman Activities

When the girls were younger I tried to do more Montessori-type activities with them, though we have fallen away from it unfortunately. Four years ago I came up with this Build-a-Snowman Tonging Activity. This activity will help with one-to-one counting and fine motor skills.

I also love to come up with activities to help the children match upper and lowercase letters.

I wanted to conclude with a fun Snowman Poem I have sung for years. A friend taught it to me and I sang it with the older children and we sang it at the Montessori when I worked there. I have also sang it with our little ones. I posted about it here, but I just recently thought it would be nice to create an image for it.

  5. We usually don't get enough snow here to make a snowman so the only way we get to experience them is through fun ideas like these. Thanks for sharing!
