Littles Learning Link Up: Fall Fire Fighting Craft

Each month you will find:

Here's a peek at what we have been up to in our homeschool.

We are trying to get back on track with our homeschool. Which has been difficult when I had three reviews due last week and three due the week before that. Tabitha has been getting her history reading in, but I don't always get to it with the other children. Plus Tabitha is reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and I am reading, as a family read aloud, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Though both of these are being used with the LitWits Kits we are reviewing, Tabitha was scheduled to be reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond anyway, as it goes with our time period in history, colonial America. 

Time to share last week's lesson/craft from co-op. 

We started out by going on the field trip to the fire station with the other classes. I love that our co-op takes this field trip almost every year, because it helps get that "fire safety" requirement out of the way. 

The one guy talks to the children about fire safety and then another gets dressed in his gear and crawls around making sure the children learn how to get a firefighter's attention in a burning, smoke filled building. 

Then they got to see the fire engines and ambulance. They even got to go in them!

When we got back to the camp, we had a short lesson. I reviewed what to do when there is a fire and showed them how to dial 9-1-1. Then we sang a song and recited a rhyme I found on the internet. There are a lot of variations of these, so I do not know where they originated to give credit for the original. 

The children loved the first song and wanted to do it multiple times. The rhyme they weren't as fond of.

I’m a Little Firefighter

I’m a little firefighter on the go

here is my helmet

here is my hose

when I see a fire

hear me shout

turn on the water and put it out

Five Little Firefighters

Five little firefighters

sleeping in a row

Ring goes the bell

Down the pole they go

They raced to the fire

and put out all the flames

then the five little firefighters

went back to bed again

THEN it was time for the craft.

Fall Fire Fighting Craft

You will need:

Cardstock

Brown Construction Paper

Black Crayon (or marker)

Red and Orange Leaves

Acrylic Paint (Red, Orange, Yellow, Light Blue (or blue and white))

Glue sticks

White Glue

Tape

Paint brushes (one with wide bristles another with narrow bristles)

Yellow pipe cleaners cut in half

It was very simple to get this craft prepared. All I did was cut out brown squares and brown triangles. Then I drew windows and doors. Again, the same as last week, with older children, more one-on-one time, or just more time, the children could very easily do this step. Both cutting them out and drawing on the windows and doors. If this was a craft I was doing at home with my children, even when they were preschool age, they would have done this step.

Then the children glued the square at the bottom of the cardstock and added the triangle on top. I did draw a smaller triangle on the back, leaving a little edge that is necessary for the next step.  I told the children to glue on the inside of the small triangle. 

Then we went around and put white glue around the outside of the roof so the children could add the red leaves as fire bursting out of the roof.

Then we needed to have the fire coming out of the windows. So, I went around and put a small dab of red, and orange, and yellow paint in each window. The children needed to use the larger paint brush to spread the fire.

We then went around and traced their hands in the corner of the paper. THEY were the firefighters coming to put out the fire.

We made a hole between the thumb and index finger and the children pushed the pipe cleaner in to be the hose.

Then they added blue paint water to put out the fire.

What have we been up to?

We have continued our study of the time of Ancient Rome, looking specifically at the time of Jesus. 

We are still reading Augustus Caesar's World, which has been so intriguing for me, though I do think quite a bit is going over the children's  heads (especially Harold and Hannah). We are also still trying to get through The Bronze Bow, which is a story that takes place when Jesus is already a man. 

We have continued learning about the different senses and the parts of the body that help with those senses. We just learned about the eye and sight, so have now finished all the senses. 

One thing I forgot to mention last time is that the children are all participating in NaNoWriMo with the Young Writers Program. Tabitha is writing a story called, "Streets and Alleys." Amelia story is titled, "The Timestoppers." Hannah's is called, "Camp Days." And last but not least, Harold's story is called, "Adventures of Tala."

Let's move on to this week's craft. 

Torn Paper Thankful Trees

Last week was our last co-op meeting for the fall. We won't be having co-op again until January. This last meeting for the fall is always a Harvest Party. Each group makes a craft and then we have a Dish-to-Pass meal. Usually I have the children make Thankful Placemats. However, this year, as I didn't have any clear contact paper, I decided to make something different with the Pre-K class. After singing our songs from the week before, we gathered around the table to make Thankfulness Trees. 

You will need:

White paper

Brown construction paper

Red, yellow, and orange construction paper

Glue

Picture of a turkey

Crayons

Zippy baggies

At home, I took and printed out small leaf templates on the red, yellow, and orange construction paper. And my children helped me cut them out in preparation. 

We traced the children's hands with a bit of their forearms for the tree's trunk. Then the children took strips of brown construction paper and tore them into pieces to use to fill in the trunk and branches. They then colored a turkey to add to their pictures. We then sent home colored construction paper leaves in a baggie, with instructions to write one thing they are thankful for each day and add it to their trees. 

Amelia made one here at home and has been adding leaves sharing what she is thankful for. 

The other children chose to make turkeys instead. They are adding tail feathers each day.

What have we been up to?

In our school time we have been continuing to read through the book of 2 Kings, learning about Elijah and Elisha and the miracles they performed. We just finished memorizing Psalm 1. We focused on a verse a week and now the children have it all memorized. I don't quite have it yet, though I did use to have it memorized in KJV. This time we were focused on NIV. 

The children continue to work on math using CTCMath as their primary math. Though Harold has been using Math Seeds and Hannah likes to use Starfall on occasion. For Language Arts we have been using Home School Navigator, reading different fairy tales and looking at different aspects of L.A. at the children's different levels. 

And yes, we are continuing through our reading of The Children's Homer, The Kane Chronicles, and Percy Jackson. 

We still haven't really been using the science lessons in MFW very regularly. We just run out of time in the day! However, Amelia was learning which kind of solution will keep flowers beautiful longer as her science fair project. And the younger two looked at dissolving Peeps. We have also been learning about glaciers with one of the books from Wiegl Publishers, which is my next upcoming review. It fit in nicely that the storytime at our library last month for Earth Day focused a bit on the environment, though I am not a huge fan of the focus on "global warming." 

Last week was our last week of co-op, and on Friday we had our end-of-year program. This year the children got to display art and science fair projects, and the teenagers had a photography display. I will be sharing the children's displays in this week's Wordless Wednesday. My friend and I also got to put up a display of the preschool crafts that we had done through the year. One of the displays was the Handprint Garden, which featured the Construction Paper Handprint Flowers that we made a few weeks ago, plus the Handprint Butterfly Stick Puppets that I will be sharing in this post. 

Handprint Butterfly Stick Puppets

Here is what you will need:

Various colors of construction paper

Jumbo craft sticks

Black pipe cleaners

Small wiggle eyes

Tape

White glue

Scissor

Markers or crayons to decorate the butterflies

(I used our Magic Stix and Thin Stix)

I also though the book In My Flower by Sara Gillingham went well with this craft. We had read it the week that we made the handprint flowers as well.

The first thing I did was to trace the children's hands, one at a time, on the construction paper. They chose the color they wanted. I folded the construction paper in half, and put their thumb up against the fold, having them spread their other fingers slightly. I cut them out while the children played, but older children could cut their own out.

Then the children decorated the butterflies. My daughter was the one who made the sample butterfly. She is 8 years old and was able to give the wings symmetrical designs. I didn't expect that from the younger children. 

When they were done decorating the wings and body, we glued on the wiggle eyes. I cut out small lengths of the pipe cleaner and folded it in half, then I taped them to the craft sticks.

The children then helped glue their butterflies to the craft stick.

For older children with bigger hands, the stick is almost completely covered, but for younger children, there is still a whole lot of stick showing, so I decided they make cut stick puppets.

However, first I had to glue them to the display for our program.
