Welcome to the April edition of Poppins Book Nook!
This month's theme was: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!
Our main book is Airplane Flight! A Lift-the-Flap Adventure by Susanna Leonard Hill.
This is a cute board book told in rhyming verse, geared toward the younger children, though Tabitha and Amelia enjoyed it as well. It tells the story of a little plane being piloted by Captain Bright and Co-piloted by Copilot Snow. On each page there are at least two flaps that open to help tell the story from getting ready for take off, to ascending into the air, to flying around a storm and landing on the runway.
Now, before we started on our projects for the book, we focused a bit on transportation in general. The children all made Transportation posters.
I made the background out of construction paper, onto which they glued cotton ball clouds. I also printed out pictures of various modes of transportation.
The older girls cut out their own pictures, though I helped Hannah and did it all for Harold.
They sorted the pictures into three piles: Land, Water and Sky. Then they glued them on.
The girls also drew roads and train tracks onto their land. I drew one for Harold too.
Transportation Posters:
I also gave them a Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Muffin Tin last Monday.
Then we made our Shape Airplanes
We talked about the shapes, sorted and counted them. We also talked about different parts of the airplane. The older girls had a handwriting paper labeling the parts of the airplane that I found online.
They had a blast flying around the living room.
We practiced ascending and descending.
Yes, they flew around some more.
I am trying to bring some Montessori-type activities back into our learning time. For this theme I brought out our Cloud Counting,
Cloud Spooning,
and Cloud Size Sequencing with counting.
Some other books we read this month:
The Little Airplane by Lois Lenski
My First Airplane Ride by Patricia Hubbell
