sorry, not the greatest pictures
I do love the internet. I found a couple of neat sites with information regarding care and feeding of tadpoles. All About Frogs (dot) org has a page dealing with tadpoles. As does Nature Gift Store. In fact, if you don't have a creek by you they also sell the tadpoles and food.
So far, we discovered that we don't need to buy food, because tadpoles eat....
lettuce!
It needs to be boiled for 10-15 minutes and chopped up. Then it can be frozen. Unfortunately our's turned into a frozen chunk.
We believe we have a bullfrog, we'll have to wait and see. I can say I am not looking forward to the adult stage, when lettuce will no longer be on the menu. I read that bullfrogs will eat other animals if they can fit in their mouth, like snakes, lizards and even other frogs (found that info here). Bugs are going to be bad enough. At least Steven is claiming it as his tadpole. Hehehe.
Linking this post to Science Sunday. Head on over to Adventures in Mommydom to see what other neat things are being learned.
Looking forward to seeing what you end up with.
ReplyDeleteoo what fun! Glad you don't have to feed it later!
ReplyDeleteHow interesting it will be to watch this tadpole turning into a frog! I didn't know that they love lettuce - pretty fascinating fact to me :)

I didn't know they'd eat that. You might try freezing it in ice cubes (kind of like homemade baby food), that might work better.
ReplyDeleteGrowing tadpoles is on my to-do list someday.
