Littles Learning Link Up: February 26, 2019: Peek-a-Boo Hibernating Dormouse Craft

We are in the middle of our "Hibernating Animals" unit in the Pre-K class at co-op. Last week I shared my Egg Carton Bear in a Paper Bag Cave.

I plan to continue to share my Pre-K unit posts on Fridays, even though it is on Tuesdays that I will be sharing the craft that we made. Unfortunately, I completely forgot to post this past weekend. I ran out of time on Friday, and then I got sick with the stomach bug on Saturday, which extended into all day Sunday. It is Tuesday now, and I am still not 100% better, so I will be posting last week's unit post this weekend.

Now, onto this week's craft!

Peek-a-Boo Hibernating Dormouse Craft

You will need:

Light brown construction paper

Dark brown construction paper

Metal paper fasteners (brads)

Beige yarn

Brown crayon

Black crayon

Pencil

School glue

Egg cartons (for holding the glue)

Q-tips (for applying the glue)

In preparation, for each project, I cut one piece of darker brown construction paper in half. Out of one half I cut a large oval for the hole in the tree, and on the other I traced two circles. One approximately the size of our mouse, the other a quarter of an inch larger. This is where the children were to apply glue to attach the pieces of yarn. Then I cut the yarn into 1 1/2 to 2 inch lengths. I also cut out the lopsided circle for the mouse (out of lighter brown paper), plus little ears, noses and tails out of the scraps of the darker brown paper.

The mouse isn't quite a circle or an oval, he is flattened on a couple of sides. I used the picture of the hibernating mouse in our book, A Bed for the Winter by Karen Wallace, to model my mouse after.

We started out by making the nest in the tree. The children applied the glue inside the "ring" I drew onto their paper. As we have done in the past, we applied the glue with the q-tips.

Then they attached the pieces of yarn. Some of the children folded or bunched up the yarn.

Other children attached the yarn by one end and let it hang.

We set the "Nests in the Tree" aside to dry while we worked on the mice.

We started by attaching the tail across the body, like it is all curled up. 

Then I went around and applied the glue for the ears, which they then attached. I followed that up by going around to apply the glue for the nose.

We then set them aside to dry before drawing on the sleepy eyes with the black crayon and the whiskers with a pencil.

When the children came back from gym, I gave them the large ovals and they used the brown crayons to color "holes." Then we applied glue to the back of the mice and attached them to the centers of the nests.

I had the children bring their oval "holes" and finished "mice in nests" over to me and I attached the oval to the top of the nest with the metal paper fastener.
