Scavenger Hunt Sunday: December 4, 2011

Scavenger Hunt Sunday items: Portrait, Nostalgic, Time, Full of Light and Motion

Portrait

A few weeks ago I was trying to take some shots for our Christmas card. This was my favorite shot, though I had to rotate it because it was slightly tilted (and it still is) and I added the vintage effect.

Nostalgic

When I was taking a walk the other day (once again while Tabitha was in Story Time) I decided, out of the blue, to head down the one side street. I completely forgot this "Old and New" Shop was there. I figured people who are nostalgic may like to collect antiques. That and the old fashioned tricycle brought back memories.

Time

We made it back to the library just in "time" to go and get Tabitha. This clock is right across the street from the library. And I loved this shot because I had Amelia looking up at the clock and it shows the hot air balloons on the clock very nicely. There is an annual Balloon Rally in town every summer.

Full of Light

I took this picture a short time ago. I wasn't sure what I was going to do, then I remembered hubby had finished getting the Christmas lights up this afternoon and our new Nativity figures were full of light.

Motion

I was trying to get a shot of Hannah with her name in blocks for some customizable flash cards I am going to be reviewing. I just could not get her to stay still. She is always full of motion. And I love the way her dress looks in the last shot.

Happily Mother After

I know it's blurry, but I thought it was so sweet.

I walked around our dining room table and came upon this site. The cute stuff cat named "Lazy Kitty" that was given to the girls from a friend at church last week was sitting on the floor with a mug for food.  The thing looked so real.

And I realized, I really do love this shot.

25 Days of Christmas Dec 3rd-Ways to Simplify the Holidays

I am thrilled to be able to share so many great posts this month in anticipation of Christmas with the 25 Days of Christmas Blogshare.
Today's post is brought to you by Breana at  This Mama Says.....

The Christmas season is thought of as "The most wonderful time of the year". But often times, once that time has arrived, we feel unprepared, stressed out and over burdened!

We pack our schedules with parties, shopping and baking.

We feel pressure to out do everyone around us with creating the best ever moments, traditions and memories.

This can all be incredibly overwhelming!

And the next thing you know Christmas is a few days away and you haven't done all the things you were hoping to fit in, much less enjoy the activities did accomplish.

I know for myself, especially with young children I want to provide my children with all the magic that this time of year brings, but in the past I have watched the holiday come and go with nothing crossed off my to-do list and feeling disappointed in myself for falling short.

So how can we fix this??? How can we ensure we enjoy the holidays and accomplish the things that really matter to us?

Continue Reading to find out how to simplify your holidays. Here are a few things that you can doNOW to prepare for Christmas. These are things that will take only a few minutes and ANYONE can do (even if you're not an organizing pro):

25 Days of Christmas Dec 2nd- Christmas Recipe

I am thrilled to be able to share so many great posts this month in anticipation of Christmas with the 25 Days of Christmas Blogshare.
Today's post is brought to you by Krystie at  http://vodkaandmotherhood.com/

Okay, so everyone knows that Christmas is wonderful. I love it. It's my favorite holiday. I love the music, the snow, the lights, the traditions, the food, the presents, the love, the family, but especially....THE EGGNOG!!! I am very picky about my eggnog. Seriously. It has to be just so, or I refuse to drink it. I can't have the stuff that they sell in the stores, because it is so thick that it could stop a bathtub drain in it's tracks. I know that there are others out there who feel the same way, and simply refuse to drink it. I actually won't drink it alone, unless I seriously thin it down. But, I am also a bartender and because of this, I present to you, A Southern Christmas. Don't be scared...we're gonna talk about how to make the perfect Christmas Eggnog, but with a vodkaandmotherhood twist.

25 Days of Christmas-Advent Countdown Tree

\
25 Days of Christmas

I am thrilled to be participating in the 25 Days of Christmas.

As we get ready for Christmas we, as a family, try very hard to emphasize the importance of the celebration of the birth of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. This starts at the beginning of the month with an observance of Advent, focusing on the joyful anticipation of his coming. Quite a few years ago I decided to create a countdown chart that would ultimately focus on this true meaning of Christmas. I originally saw this idea on a Christmas card and decided to incorporate it into our celebration.

I started by painting a Christmas tree onto poster board:

Last year I didn't want to paint a tree, so I just made one out of construction paper, but I prefer the painted tree. Tabitha loved the texture effect I was creating. In fact she wanted to try to make a tree herself and add texture. I will share the trees the girls made in a later post.

The children cut pictures out of old Christmas cards to use as ornaments/decorations on our tree.

I then divided the poster board into 24 sections.

And we attached the decorations with tape. I wanted to attach them with tape because on the back of each of them I had put the names of the people who had sent the card. We will pray for each person or family as we go through the month.

In the past we have cut off a piece of the tree each day. I have put different things on the back of the piece being cut off. For example, my original tree (when the older children were little) had pictures that represented different Christmas symbols and we discussed how they related to Jesus. This year we have the Bible Verses we are going to read during our Bible time. I found a great site for Advent Activities. Homeschooled-Kids.com. Not only do they have the Bible readings (which I needed because I can't find my book I've had for years) but there are recipe and craft ideas.

The "tree" will not be cut until this evening, Dec 1st. Then each night we will cut off one section and read the verses along with singing the suggested songs and doing the activities. As we cut the tree we will reveal the picture underneath which is a cross.

I just drew a cross on another piece of poster board and colored it with crayons.

Then I painted fallen branches.

The card I got this idea from had several pages in which the needles and branches slowly fell off the tree, until at the end we were left with a cross, a reminder that Jesus didn't remain a baby in a manger.
On December 24th, after our Christmas Eve candle lighting service at church, we will come home to have Bible time and cut off the last piece. Revealing the cross underneath.

Originally the tree was huge (I actually covered the window in the trailer where we were living). So on Christmas morning my children were opening their presents under the cross, not by a tree. Here is a picture of the tree (couldn't find one of the cross on Christmas morning).

Here are a couple of shots of the tree I made last year (so you can see the difference in size).

The great thing about this advent countdown tree is that you don't have to start it today. There have been years that I procrastinated and the tree didn't get made until later in the month. You can customize how many days you count down by drawing less sections!
