Littles Learning Link Up: February 13, 2018- Sticky Paper Penguins

 Each month you will find:
  • A seasonal round-up (usually toward the beginning of the month)
  • Posts where I share what I have been up to with my early elementary children (including occasional highlight posts where I share how we used ideas that have been linked up here on Littles Learning Link Up).
Each week, I will host a link up, where you can share either what you have been up to recently, or old posts that may go with the theme.  Feel free to link up more than one post.

Each week I will continue to feature a couple of posts from those that have been linked up.

I hope you will continue to share your wonderful posts, and I hope you will find something new to try with your child(ren).

It would be great for everyone to stop by and visit the other linked-up posts as well. Check them out, leave some comments, pin those that interest you. Let's make this a real party and socialize with each other.

What have we been up to?

We have been continuing our lessons with My Father's World Creation to the Greeks. Thankfully everyone is feeling much better, though there are some coughs hanging on. In our Bible readings we have made it to the book of Joshua and the fall of Jericho. We learned a bit about early American cultures in both North and South America. Then we came back to Ancient Egypt, learning about Akhenaton and Queen Nefertiti and King Tut, plus Ramses II. We were supposed to make a Senet game but I completely forgot, so perhaps we will do that this week on our no-school week. We are also reviewing and learning new information with one of our newest review products, the Snapshot Moments in History: Ancient Egypt Timeline from Home School in the Woods. Here's a sneak peek:

Last week in co-op we made Colorful Coffee Filter Hearts. I decided to share that project last Friday.

Now let's move on to our project for this week. A couple of week's ago I was still on the Penguin theme, and we made Sticky Paper Penguins.

Sticky Paper Penguins

Amelia helped me get this little guy ready.

To make your own Sticky Paper Penguins, you will need:

Black construction paper
Orange construction paper
White tissue paper cut into small squares
Wiggle eyes (an assortment is fun)
Clear Contact paper
Glue sticks
White school glue

Before class I got the penguins cut out from the black construction paper. I drew the outline freehand, first drawing a bowling pin shape, then adding the flippers. Then I cut it out and used that as a template to cut out enough black penguins for the class. Then I drew an oval in the middle of my template, cut that out and used it to trace the ovals on the penguins tummies, which I also cut out. I then cut the contact paper into ovals a bit bigger than the hole. Each child will need two. I also cut out the penguins feet and beaks from orange construction paper before class.

When we got to class I set the project up by applying one contact paper oval to each penguin. They were set on the table with the sticky side facing up. All the other materials were set in the middle of the table for the children to use.

The children started by attaching the tissue paper squares to the sticky tummies.

Then I attached the other contact paper oval to that side of the penguin to protect the tummies, make sure dirt wouldn't attach to the stickiness, and also make sure none of the squares fell off. We then turned them around for the children to attach the feet and beaks with glue sticks.

I prefer to use white school glue to attach wiggle eyes.

All done.

Let's take a look at that review schedule real quick:

We have started using our new review products for the 2018 Crew year. So far we have been chosen to review Bytes of Learning's UltraKey Online and Starfall's Home Membership. Those reviews will be posting in late February. We are also reviewing the Ancient Egypt Timeline from Home School in the Woods that I mentioned above. Additionally we are going to be using NatureGlo's eScience. I am reading the book What Every Child Should Know Along the Way from Parenting Made Practical. And the girls are going to be making some 3-D Super Bead vehicles from Zirrly for Harold's birthday. Those reviews will post in March. We will also be receiving Memoria Press's new Traditional Spelling II for Hannah. I will be sharing that review in April.

Here are some things I would like to share with you:

Several weeks ago I shared a round up chock-full of penguin activities.
