My Favorite pets By Gus W. For Ms. Smolinski's Class Children's Book {Review and Giveaway}

We had the opportunity to review this hilarious children's book called My Favorite Pets: By Gus W. For Ms. Smolinski's Class. This book was written by National Book Award winner Jeanne Birdsall and illustrated by New Yorker Cartoonist Harry Bliss.

About the book:

The text of this book is the report that Gus has written for his teacher, Ms. Smolinski. He was supposed to write about his favorite pet. His family has seventeen sheep, so he chose them to star in his report. On each page, Gus is sharing little details about the sheep, some of which are hilarious by themselves, while other details become much more humorous when paired with the illustrations on the page. For instance, we learn that, " A boy sheep is a ram. He has horns."

And then on the next page it states, "The horns do not come off." Which is quite true of course. Then we add the picture:

Throughout the book, Gus is getting himself in trouble while learning things sheep do and do not like, what they can and can not do. These poor sheep and Gus's brother are at the mercy of the curiosity of a young boy who tends to take things too far and not really think through what he is doing.

What did we think of it?:

First of all, I LOVE that it is written as Gus's assignment and that we get to see the notebook lines on each page. Occasionally, the text also includes talk bubbles of what his parents are saying to him. It is a hilarious book with wonderful illustrations that really "make" the story.

I also thought it was very creative that the title page, which is like the cover of the report, is also found at the conclusion of the story, with the grade he received plus a note from the teacher.

What do the kids have to say?

Tabitha: I think it is cute and funny and a good lesson not to have sheep for pets, unless you're a farmer or very good with sheep.

Amelia: It is weird.

Hannah: I think it was silly. I think the silliest part was that the horns don't come of boy sheep.

Harold: My favorite part was a silly part. The part when he put the scarf on the sheep.

Field Trip Friday: Questing For Marvelous Migrating Monarchs

Well, we finished our butterfly unit several weeks ago, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to attend this fun homeschool event. Not only did we learn more about Monarch butterflies than we had learned in our My Father's World curriculum, we also learned how to tag the butterflies. And Tabitha was thrilled to be the one in her group to actually catch a butterfly. They worked together to tag it, then she got to release it.

First some pictures of the nature center.

Crawling through the bear cave.

Learning to catch and tag a butterfly.  They practiced on plastic butterflies.

Heading outside. Harold was the first one to spot a caterpillar.

Then we spotted a chrysalis. This is the first time I have seen one out in nature.

Tabitha caught a butterfly!

Gently removing it from the net.

Writing down the identification info from the tag sticker.

Deciding whether it is male or female.

Tagged and ready to go.

Another group caught a butterfly and gave Harold a chance to hold it.

Then we found some milkweed pod.

We ended our trip with a visit to the Arch Tree.

Throwback Thursday Blog-Style #118: September 22, 2016

Welcome back to...

I know, I know, Throwback Thursday seems to be all about sharing pictures from the past, great memories that mean something to you, that you would like to share with others. At least that is how it appears to me. Throwback Thursday wasn't something I was participating in, and then I came up with an idea.

I thought it would be great fun and a help to my blog to share old content, but not just any old content. Each week I will share an old blog post from a previous year, any year, BUT it has to be from the current week (for example, something I've posted around September 22nd, from any previous year)  I will go in, edit the post if needed, add a pinnable image if I don't already have one, and share it on Facebook.

Last year I focused solely on review posts for the posts I wanted to share. It was fun remembering some of the review products I had forgotten about. This year I will be focusing on recipes I have shared in the past.

Would you like to join in? You do not need to edit your past post in any way, you don't need to create a pinnable image, though it couldn't hurt, in fact it will help your blog traffic to add quality pinnable images to your posts.

Just go into your archives, choose a favorite post from this current week from any previous year, and link it up below. (If you don't have anything from this current week, it is still okay to link up with a post from a previous year around this time. And if you haven't been blogging for a full year, feel free to share any earlier post.)

Please make sure to share from the past as instructed above if you would like your post to qualify for the Featured Post. Most weeks I find that there is a wonderful post, but I can't feature it because it is a current post, not from the past. I love reading the current posts, if you want to share them. However, I am not able to feature them, because the spirit of Throwback Thursday Blog-Style is to share posts from the past.
Thank you

I will be pinning posts to my appropriate Pinterest boards and will be randomly selecting a Featured Throwback Thursday post to share next week. Just a note, I will be sharing a picture from your post if you are selected as the featured post, but I will link back to your post. I will ALWAYS give credit and link back. By linking up you are giving me permission to use your picture in the post.

Here is my Throwback Thursday post:
