Welcome to the June edition of Poppins Book Nook!
This month's theme was: The Great Outdoors
This month I found some books right away, though we didn't use them until the end of the month as we had so much going on.
These "Who's Been Here?" books by Lindsay Barrett George are all focused on the same children, a brother and sister. They go exploring by a pond, through the woods, and in the snow, finding evidence of wildlife all around them. The reader gets a far off view of each item they find along with a description of it. Then, on the next page the author shares what animal has been there, complete with full color, two page spread pictures.
This month, to go along with the books, I decided to focus on animal tracks. I found some fun printables online for the girls' workboxes.
In this one they were to match the type of animal track, not the specific animal. There were "zig-zaggers," "bounders," "waddlers/'fatties'," and "leapers and hoppers" to choose from.
Then they had to match prints to the animal that made them.
And for an extra challenge they completed this "Making Tracks!" worksheet.
(as soon as I find the links to where I found these I will add them)
Then, they all worked on matching tracks to the right animal.
Yes, Hannah and Harold needed a little help.
Of course, we had to make some playdough to make prints in.
We left it white so it could be snow.
They used crayons, paintbrushes, hands/fingers, and a horse to make prints.
And what would a unit on The Great Outdoors be if we didn't actually go out and search for our own animal tracks and evidence of animals being around.
