This week you can link up pictures of your homeschoolers with your state tree and/or flower. Head on over and check it out. Oh, and if you link up with your photo you can have a chance to win a

Today Amelia, Hannah and I went to the library while Tabitha was at VBS. We were trying to discover what our state tree looked like, so we asked for a tree identification book. Armed with our book, we picked Tabitha up and walked around the town again (where VBS is being held). Unfortunately we couldn't find a matching tree.
Not to worry, I knew where we could find a tree. Years and years and years ago (okay when Krystal was in elementary school) she brought home a sapling of an Eastern Hemlock that we planted in the yard outside the trailer where we were living. In hindsight, it is planted way too close to the trailer and way to close to the tree Steven planted (in our defense we thought the little stick Steven planted was a bush).
Anyway, we went over to the trailer (we moved 4 years ago) which is just around the corner really, and asked if we could take a picture.
An Eastern Hemlock has leaves that lie flat on either side of the shoot and the leaves taper to a rounded tip. The "leaves" are dark green above with two white bands beneath. I checked "our" tree against the information in Eyewitness handbooks Trees by Allen J. Coombes. Yep, it most definitely was an Eastern Hemlock the school gave Krystal.
Would you say it is time those trees came down or what? You can't really see the Hemlock as it is buried in the other tree.
Next week we get to link up our state flag. Got some ideas floating around in my head on how I am going to do that.
how fun - thanks for trespassing to get the photo ;P
