The linky is at the bottom.

These past two weeks we have been enjoying trying out the lessons over at schoolhouseteachers.com. (Check out the review)

In the PreK Activities we have been focusing on Luke 1 and 2 in preparation for Christmas. One of the suggestions is to make Baby Jesus Haystacks. These are so similar to the nests we made during our last Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen. However, I made a substitution that I feel makes them look a lot more like haystacks.

Baby Jesus Haystacks

This recipe actually comes from dtlk.com. They call for:

1 bag of chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
4 cups chow mein noodles
mini marshmallows

As you can see, I substituted white morsels for the chocolate chips because I felt once they were melted with the peanut butter they would look a lot more like hay.

3 girls not quite as excited as they usually are for time in the kitchen.

I decided to only do 1/2 a batch so we needed to divide the bag of chips into two bowls so I could show the girls what half a bag equaled.

Then we added 1/4 of peanut butter.

We stirred it after 1 1/2 minutes in the microwave.

It still needed a little bit longer (which was mentioned on the recipe). We warmed it in 30 second increments to make sure we weren't over heating it. It took another 1 1/2 minutes to get nice and smooth.

They took turns adding some chow mein noodles.

And then they tossed it with 2 wooden spoons to get the noodles evenly coated.

A little marshmallow on each one to represent baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes.

They hardened nicely overnight.

Do you have your children help you in the kitchen?  What lessons do they learn? Do you have any kid friendly recipes to share?

I'd love to see your posts, whether you have done something this week or some time in the past. Just link up below. This is a weekly linky.
