A Look At Our Week: September 6-9 and September 12-16

Our first couple of weeks of school have gone pretty smoothly. I have been trying very hard to use my planner to keep us on target. Depending upon how much we can get done each day, we have 2 or 3 more weeks until we are finished with My Father's World Adventures. We will then take one week off and start ECC (Exploring Countries and Cultures). I'm quite excited! We just placed our order and I can't wait to get my hands on it to see what all we will be learning.

Now for a look back at our first two weeks of school. I'm not going to share all about our first day of school, as you can see that in my September 7th Wordless Wednesday post.  Here is a look at the books we started our week with. We needed to finish off our Civil War books before starting the ones for our current weeks.

We also finished off our Sun unit in the Apologia Astronomy book. We LOVE this curriculum, but are going to put it aside so we can work on Science Shepherd before our membership expires. You can check out my review of Apologia Astronomy here, and my review of Science Shepherd here.

We started back in with My Father's World Kindergarten with the letter E for Elephant. In MFW K each unit has "Words to Remember." For Elephant we learned that "I will remember what God has done for me." Amelia decided to make these chains of things she was thankful for, and Harold joined right in.

In order to get through the rest of Adventures in a timely manner, I have been doubling up on the work, especially the states. I figured the state sheets are simple enough that they can do more than one a day.

Tabitha ended up having to do 3 in one day because she was sick the first day

As I have mentioned, Hannah is starting in with 1st grade, mainly using the phonics book while joining in with us for history and such. Here she is working on that book while Harold is working on the K sheets. He was definitely ready for these.

And though she complains about the writing sometimes, she was definitely ready to move ahead.

One of the activities for E:Elephant instructed me to show Harold several items and then take some away while he closed his, so we could see what he remembered (the whole elephant/memory thing). This is something I did a lot with the older girls. When we did it, we used our picture cards that I made way back when I was doing Letter of the Week. I still use these cards for K, so I decided to use them for this activity.

Then he insisted that I had to cover my eyes so he could take some away.

Here are the books we read for the first week of K.

And of course, the books we read for Adventures on the Civil War.

Plus the books that went with our state studies and history.

This past week we got out our Fun With Magnets kit that comes with My Father's World Adventures.

Tabitha has been working on her French.

We talked about Jesus being the Resurrection and the Life. One of the object lessons was to have the children be seeds that had to die and be buried in order to live and grow and bear fruit.

I decided to use the Can Do Cubes with My Father's World. Harold had to use the blend ladder, so we used the cubes in the squares. Perfect fit.

We also had a chance to go to the library on Saturday for some fun science.

Color Crawl:

Making slime (which they have done before):

However, this is the first time I have seen slime made into sun catchers.

And watching Ivory soap expand in the microwave.

As you can see, we had a busy, first couple of weeks.

What have you been up to?
