Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen #94: Cracker Caterpillars

Time for Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen
(A weekly linky to share what you and your children have created in the kitchen.)

The linky is at the bottom.

This week's Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen was again from ABC Twiggles. I was working on the letter C with Harold and Hannah, and knowing how much they love crackers, I thought this was a wonderful idea. Tabitha, Amelia, and Hannah were able to work almost entirely independently. Mommy did have to help Harold, who was not very happy he couldn't eat everything as soon as it was handed to him.

Ingredients:

8 round snack crackers per caterpillar
peanut butter
jelly
banana
chocolate chips (or raisins)

This is such a cute idea and simple to make.

I gave the children their 8 crackers and we did a little math first, checking out what half of 8 was by lining the crackers up, 4 on one side, 4 on the other. (This was mainly for Hannah's benefit, as the older girls already know this.) They were told that half of the crackers needed peanut butter on them, and the other half needed jelly.

Remember I said Harold wasn't happy he couldn't eat his crackers until the caterpillar was made. Well, here you go...

The girls then sliced a quarter of a banana. They put slices on three crackers and ate the rest.

The banana-less cracker was then given 2 chocolate chips for eyes and the girls created their caterpillars. This was great for working on the simple ABAB pattern.

Unfortunately, now that the caterpillars were done, Harold wasn't interested in eating them, or getting his picture taken. Silly boy.

Do you have your children help you in the kitchen?  What lessons do they learn? Do you have any kid friendly recipes to share?

I'd love to see your posts, whether you have done something this week or some time in the past. Just link up below. This is a weekly linky.
