Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen: Chocolate Chip Cookies

Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen Time
(link up is at the bottom of the post)
Yesterday, while wasting time socializing on Facebook, I discovered that is was National Chocolate Chip Cookie day. I decided the girls and I would make the recipe Ramblings of a Christian Mom shared. There is nothing wrong with trying new recipes. Num, num.

The Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

3/4 cup shortening
1 1/4 cup brown sugar (lightly packed)
1 egg
2 TBS milk
2 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cup flour
1 tsp salt
3/4 tsp baking soda
3/4 cup chocolate chips

First we creamed together the shortening and brown sugar for 2 minutes.

Then, in a small bowl we beat the egg with the milk and vanilla.

Then we added the egg mixture to the sugar mixture and beat it together.

In a separate bowl we combined the flour, salt and baking soda.

Then we added it to the creamed mixture and beat it until just blended. (no picture as I was doing this)
Then we stirred in the chocolate chips.

I dropped them onto ungreased cookie sheets by heaping spoonfuls.
Then we baked them for about 9 minutes (the recipe calls for 8-10 min)

After they came out of the oven I let them sit on the cookie sheet for 2 minutes (or a bit more) and then transferred them to the cooling rack.
Then they got put on a serving plate and served up with smiles.

These were very good, but I agree with my hubby that the salt needs to be cut back a little.

Of course Tabitha read the recipe and Amelia read the ingredients off the ingredient flash cards I made for her. We are struggling a bit with fractions. Which is weird, they used to get it. For example, I will show them the 1/4 teaspoon and ask them how many we need to make 3/4 of a teaspoon. They used to be able to answer. They also used to be able to answer that 4 would make a whole teaspoon. I realize that they are young for fractions. I just don't get why they could answer me correctly before and not now. Confusion...

Anyway.

Do you have your children help you in the kitchen?  What lessons do they learn? Do you have any kid friendly recipes to share?
I'd love to see your posts, whether you have done something this week or some time in the past. Just link up below. This is a weekly linky.
