Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen: Fruit Dessert Pizza

It has been awhile since we have had time in the kitchen together. This week I decided I wanted to do my second week of the Pizza unit I was planning in my head a couple of months ago. Unfortunately back then I ended up with no energy and no motivation. So this week I planned another week full of pizza meals. But we needed a different Dessert Pizza. We loved the other one, but we wasted so much. The one we made this week was a lot closer to what I was imagining for a dessert pizza. Once again I found the recipe on allrecipes.com. This one is called Fruit Pizza I.

We started out by having Tabitha read the ingredient list and me gather them up.

Crust:
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Frosting:
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Then we softened the butter in the microwave:

The butter and 3/4 cup of sugar are creamed together until smooth.
(We discussed that one stick of butter equals 8 TBS which equals 1/2 cup. And the girls counted 3- 1/4 cups to equal 3/4 cup. Oh, and we counted in Spanish too.)

Then we added the egg:

The mixture was set aside while we combined the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt:

(I just love that Hannah is right in there with them now.)

(Tabitha had to be cute and use two spoons to mix.)

Of course the girls got to lick the beaters and spoon.

The dough is then pressed onto an ungreased pizza pan (we use a cookie sheet).

Then I realized we still needed the beaters to make the frosting.

We added the cream cheese, 1/2 cup sugar and vanilla. Then we mixed it together with the mixer. I forgot to get any pictures, but you get the idea.

As it was getting quite late I cut the fruit, otherwise I would have let the girls help. I know they can cut bananas, they showed me that when we made the first dessert pizza. Anyway, I DID have them put the fruit on the pizza.

Even Hannah helped. Then I realized she was also helping herself.

And missing the pizza a bit.

But it turned out delicious.

Though Tabitha didn't quite think the frosting was delicious.

Do you have your children help you in the kitchen?  What lessons do they learn? Do you have any kid friendly recipes to share?
I'd love to see your posts, whether you have done something this week or some time in the past. Just link up below. This is (supposed to be) a weekly linky, I just need to figure out a button now.

  1. When Julie helps me with baking, I give her different sized measuring cups/spoons so she has to figure out the fractions.
