Littles Learning Link Up: May 8, 2018: Rock Cycle Fun

 Each month you will find:
  • A seasonal round-up (usually toward the beginning of the month)
  • Posts where I share what I have been up to with my early elementary children (including occasional highlight posts where I share how we used ideas that have been linked up here on Littles Learning Link Up).
Each week, I will host a link up, where you can share either what you have been up to recently, or old posts that may go with the theme.  Feel free to link up more than one post.

Each week I will continue to feature a couple of posts from those that have been linked up.

I hope you will continue to share your wonderful posts, and I hope you will find something new to try with your child(ren).

It would be great for everyone to stop by and visit the other linked-up posts as well. Check them out, leave some comments, pin those that interest you. Let's make this a real party and socialize with each other.

What have we been up to?

In our school time we have been continuing to read through the book of 2 Kings, learning about Elisha and the miracles he performed.  We just started memorizing Isaiah 40:21-24. We are focusing on a couple of verses a week. We will actually be focusing on Isaiah 40: 21-31 through the end of the year.

The children continue to work on math using CTCMath as their primary math. Though Harold has been using Math Seeds and Hannah likes to use Starfall on occasion. For Language Arts we have been using Home School Navigator, reading different fairy tales and looking at different aspects of L.A. at the children's different levels.

And yes, we are continuing through our reading of The Children's Homer, The Kane Chronicles, and Percy Jackson.

Here's a quick look at last week:

We finished up our study on glaciers using the media enhanced book from Weigl Publishers. We worked on word building with the game Word-a-Melon. Amelia has been working on cursive. Then there are some pictures of our days, reading, exercising, working on the computer and math drill. The bottom right picture shows the children gathered around the computer listening to the read alouds for the books with Home School Navigator.

I finally got us back into the science lessons scheduled in the MFW lessons. Yesterday we learned about the Rock Cycle using crayons. Here's a quick peek at what we did.

The children and I weathered (grated) the crayons.

Then we mixed the sediments (shavings) together.

We applied pressure in the form of hammering.

The shavings partially stuck together, but when I tried to pound them some more, even taking them outside to pound harder (daddy was asleep upstairs) and stomp on it with my feet, sadly what had become fused together broke up. So, we gave up on the sedimentary rock section, planning to do it again in the future. We moved on to applying heat.

And here are our igneous rocks, I mean crayons.

I was then reminded that I had shared a guest post about this very subject a couple of years ago titled, Using Crayons to Learn About Rocks.

And then I remembered we studied rocks several years ago. We made Chocolate Rocks Cookies:

We might just have to make at least one of those this week.

Let's take a look at that review schedule real quick:

Last week I shared my review of Weigl Publishers and the media-enhanced books we have been enjoying.
Later on in May I will share the reviews for Kids EmailHome School Navigator, and the book T is for Tree: A Bible ABC from Reformed Free Publishing Association

In June I will be sharing reviews of New American Cursive 2 from Memoria Press, and Critical Thinking Detective Book 1 from The Critical Thinking Co.

Here are some things I would like to share with you:
