Littles Learning Link Up: May 15, 2018 - Observing Fresh Water and Salt Water

 Each month you will find:
  • A seasonal round-up (usually toward the beginning of the month)
  • Posts where I share what I have been up to with my early elementary children (including occasional highlight posts where I share how we used ideas that have been linked up here on Littles Learning Link Up).
Each week, I will host a link up, where you can share either what you have been up to recently, or old posts that may go with the theme.  Feel free to link up more than one post.

Each week I will continue to feature a couple of posts from those that have been linked up.

I hope you will continue to share your wonderful posts, and I hope you will find something new to try with your child(ren).

It would be great for everyone to stop by and visit the other linked-up posts as well. Check them out, leave some comments, pin those that interest you. Let's make this a real party and socialize with each other.

What have we been up to?

In our school time we skipped out of  2 Kings for a bit to read Jonah and to read about the prophet Isaiah being called. Then we went back to 2 Kings to read about Israel being taken captive We also read about the Assyrian Empire out of our history books. We continued memorizing Isaiah 40:21-24. We are focusing on a couple of verses a week. We will actually be focusing on Isaiah 40: 21-31 through the end of the year.

The children continue to work on math using CTCMath as their primary math. Though Harold has been using Math Seeds and Hannah likes to use Starfall on occasion. For Language Arts we have been using Home School Navigator, reading different fairy tales and looking at different aspects of L.A. at the children's different levels. Amelia is working on her cursive with a new-to-us book from Memoria Press and Tabitha is working on critical thinking skills with a book from the Critical Thinking Co. And we are still practicing building words while playing Word A Melon and Bananagrams Jr.

And yes, we are continuing through our reading of The Children's Homer, The Kane Chronicles, and Percy Jackson.

Here's a quick look at last week:

We've continued with the science lessons scheduled in the MFW teacher manual. Last week we learned about the differences between fresh water and salt water.

First we looked at the density, and learned that fresh water could sit on top of salt water.

Then we observed the differences fresh water, salt water, and sugar water had when freezing.

We started by freezing fresh water and salt water.

The children were fascinated by the fact that the fresh water froze solid, but the salt water looked like slush. Then they played "Iceberg, Iceberg" which is sort of like hot potato but they sang a song to the tune of "Button button who's got the button." Their version is, "Iceberg, iceberg, who's got the iceberg, if you've got the iceberg you are out," which they sang while sliding the frozen fresh water across the table.

Then we decided we wanted to compare salt water with sugar water.

I forgot to take a picture, but the salt water barely froze this time while the sugar water froze quite a bit.

Then we compared how ice cubes melted. One was left alone, one had salt poured on top, and the other had sugar.

You can't see it the greatest, but the salt (on the right) most definitely made a deeper crater in the ice cube.

Then they wanted to stick the ice cubes to a piece of yarn.

On Saturday we had a blast at the Super Heroes vs. Super Villains Party at the library. I was going to share pictures in this week's Wordless Wednesday, but forgot I was going to have pictures of Mother's Day to share. So, I will have to share them in a separate post or next week or something, because, well, this post is getting too long.

Let's take a look at that review schedule real quick:
This week I will be posting my review for Kids Email. And next week I will share my reviews of Home School Navigator, and the book T is for Tree: A Bible ABC from Reformed Free Publishing Association

In June I will be sharing reviews of New American Cursive 2 from Memoria PressCritical Thinking Detective Book 1 from The Critical Thinking Co, MaxScholar, and Grammar and Writing 3 from Hake Publishing.

Here are some things I would like to share with you:
