Littles Learning Link Up: January 24, 2017 - Snowmen at Night - Sledding Snowmen Scene {A Book-Inspired Craft}

 Each month you will find:
  • A seasonal round-up (toward the beginning of the month)
  • A guest post featuring crafts, activities, tips, snack ideas or other early childhood topics. (toward the end of the month)
  • Posts where I share what I have been up to with my preschoolers and/or early elementary children (including occasional highlight posts where I share how we used ideas that have been linked up here on Littles Learning Link Up).
Each week, I will host a link up, where you can share either what you have been up to recently, or old posts that may go with the theme.  Feel free to link up more than one post.

Each week I will continue to feature a couple of posts from those that have been linked up.

I hope you will continue to share your wonderful posts, and I hope you will find something new to try with your child(ren).

It would be great for everyone to stop by and visit the other linked-up posts as well. Check them out, leave some comments, pin those that interest you. Let's make this a real party and socialize with each other.

What have we been up to?

In our homeschool we have been busy learning about the rainforest and Brazil. We also just finished our kindergarten unit on Jewels, and have moved on to F: Frog.

Moving on to co-op, last week we read the book Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. I came up with a simple craft based on one of the fun pages in the book. In this story, a young boy is wondering why his snowman looks different in the morning. He imagines the snowmen all coming to life and having a grand old time. One of the things they do is sled down the hill.

So, I pulled out the black construction paper, along with the white paint and some other materials and came up with this fun scene.

Here are the materials you will need:

Black construction paper
White construction paper (for the snowy hill, moon, and snowmen)
White school glue
Glue stick
Shimmery glitter
White paint
Blue paint
Q-tip
Paintbrush
Pencil and crayons (not pictured)

We got busy making our snowy scene.

First the children glued the snowy hill to the left side of the paper.

Then they glued the moon in the sky. We used q-tips as we did the week before, to dab snow falling from the sky.

Then I added a tiny bit of blue paint to the white paint to get a nice light blue. We used the paint brush to paint the snowy hill and give it a night time hue.

After letting the paint dry, the children were each given several little snowmen I had cut out. They gave the snowmen facial features and buttons. Then they glued them on the hill.

For a final touch, we gave the picture a shimmery coat. I mixed the glitter into some glue, stirred it together and used the paintbrush to cover the hill. I had done the sky on my picture, but found that the paper curled too much, so I decided not to have the children do that on theirs.

Here are their finished creations:

Let's take a look at that review schedule:

We are currently reviewing Times Alive from Times Tables the Fun Way. Look for this review the second week in February. We are also reviewing two products that will be shared on the Old Schoolhouse website - Joseph: The Canada Goose, which is a storybook and art lesson book from How Great Thou Art Publications, and The Word Warriors Game.

Something I would like to share with you:

Here is my Chock-Full of Snowman Fun Round Up from last year.

And here is my Celebration of Snowmen post from a few years ago.

And, as Valentines Day is right around the corner, here is my Tons-of-Fun Valentines Day Round Up.
