Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen #109: Race Track Birthday Cake

Time for Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen
(A weekly linky to share what you and your children have created in the kitchen.)

The linky is at the bottom.

The girls were able to help make Harold's birthday cake again this year. Last year we made him a Dump Truck Cake. This year, I thought it would be fun to make him a cake either with cars or dinosaurs.  I finally decided to go with a race track cake and found a simple looking idea over at Coolest Birthday Cakes.

The girls took turns helping.

Hannah and I started by making a simple Funfetti boxed cake.

I found a recipe for a delicious Buttercream Frosting recipe over at The Bold Abode.

It calls for:

8-10 cups powdered sugar (we used 8 and it was perfect)
2 sticks butter, softened
2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup milk

Originally, Tabitha came to help, but then all 3 girls helped make the frosting.

We creamed 1/2 of the sugar (4 cups) with the butter.
Then we added the milk and vanilla.
We beat it at medium speed until smooth, then added 1/2 of the remaining sugar. We beat that for 2 minutes, and then we added the remaining sugar and beat again for 2 minutes. Finally, I added green food coloring.

We frosted the cake.

I formed a number 3.

We added green food coloring to some shredded coconut and stirred it around until it was a nice green.

I sprinkled the "grass" onto the outsides of the cake.

Amelia helped me crush Oreo cookies in our Magic Bullet to make the blacktop road.

I added some tubed frosting for the yellow lines. I definitely want to find an alternative if I make this again. That stuff stuck to my finger and the knife, making it very difficult to make the lines.

We added cars...

...and a sign and a checkered banner.

Do you have your children help you in the kitchen?  What lessons do they learn? Do you have any kid friendly recipes to share?
I'd love to see your posts, whether you have done something this week or some time in the past. Just link up below. This is a weekly linky.
