This week I wanted to share the way we do our workboxes. I was introduced to workboxes at the end of last summer, and I liked the sound of the way it worked. However, financially and space-wise, traditional-type workboxes weren't going to work. Several months ago I shared how I found this neat idea to use cereal boxes for workboxes over at A Mother's Journal. Here is what I came up with:
I cut the tops off of the cereal boxes and used wrapping paper to decorate the boxes. I was using mini post-it notes to number the boxes. I then started using cardstock numbers with Velcro.
There are pros and cons to this arrangement. They definitely take up less room and are cheaper than the usual workboxes. If one gets ruined, I can easily make a new one. However, it is hard to find cereal boxes that are big enough to accommodate some of their work. We use these mainly for worksheets, though I did have 2 big cereal boxes to put their math workbooks in. (We got them at BJ's when we had a trial membership, otherwise we wouldn't have had them. I would love more!) When we were using them with our K curriculum I gave them a snack in Workbox #2 so they could have a break from their work. Now that we have changed our schedule with 1st grade we have snack before the children start their workboxes, so they have work in every box. The 4th workbox usually has some sort of math or reading manipulative in it.
What is in your workboxes?
Such a great idea! I'm glad to be hosting workbox wednesday with you! Too bad you don't have some Costco size cereal boxes!!
