Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen #74: Dump Truck Cake

Time for Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen
(A weekly linky to share what you and your children have created in the kitchen.)

The linky is at the bottom.

The children were so excited to help make Harold's birthday cake earlier this week! I saw this cake idea a couple of weeks ago and knew I was going to have to make it for Harold. You can see the original cake at The Joys of Boys. The best part is, it is really quite easy to make.

Ingredients:

1 box chocolate cake, baked according to directions in 2 round cake pans
2 cans chocolate frosting
Kit-Kats
Chocolate Covered Raisins
Whoppers
(You can use whatever kind of chocolate you would like, this is the candy we chose)
Oreos

Tabitha started by frosting the bottom layer.

While Tabitha was frosting, Amelia and Hannah started chopping up the Kit-Kats.

Then Tabitha and I counted out enough Oreos to go around the edge of the cake in two rows. The remainder were put in a plastic zippy bag and crushed by Tabitha.

Amelia frosted the top of the cake.

While Amelia was frosting the cake, Hannah was busy playing with the dump truck and candy.

We placed the Oreos around the edge of the cake, leaving a space as a "road."

We mixed the candy and Oreo crumbs in a bowl.

They were then placed in the dump truck and down the side as if the dump truck were dumping the load of candy.

Harold loved his cake.

Or should I say, he loved his dump truck, which he had been eyeing since he spied it way up on the counter on top of a pot in the kitchen, where I had placed it while making dinner.

Do you have your children help you in the kitchen?  What lessons do they learn? Do you have any kid friendly recipes to share?

I'd love to see your posts, whether you have done something this week or some time in the past. Just link up below. This is a weekly linky.

  6. Thank you so much for inviting me to your party! Sorry I'm a little late, but I've been fighting a sinus infection, not fun. You have adorable helpers in the kitchen, and the cake is super cute. PINed it, and will be back to participate this weekend again. Enjoy the rest of your week. :)
