Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen #72: Rock Cycle Fudge

Time for Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen
(A weekly linky to share what you and your children have created in the kitchen.)

The linky is at the bottom.

For this week's Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen I searched for a way to help teach the children about the rock cycle. This recipe I found was not quite what I was looking for, but it was fun and educational. (And it was the first time I ever made fudge!)

Ingredients:

1/3 cup evaporated milk (silt)
1 cup sugar (quartz crystals)
1 Tbs margarine (sediments)
1 cup mini marshmallows (limestone pieces)
1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (sandstone pieces)
3/4 cup chocolate chips (basalt pieces)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

We added the evaporated milk, sugar and margarine to a bowl.

Every time we added an ingredient Harold would get all happy and clap.

We stirred it until smooth.

Then we set it aside while we put the marshmallows, walnuts, chocolate chips and vanilla to another bowl.

We microwaved the milk/sugar/margarine mixture on high for 45 seconds. Then we took it out, stirred and repeated 3 times.

When our magma was nice and hot and bubbly...

we added the other ingredients (stone pieces) to it.

And we watched how the magma changed the stones.

Then we poured it in a pan lined with wax paper.

We refrigerated it over night. I am so glad I found my wax paper, because it came out of the pan so easily and the wax paper pulled right off.

Directions:
1-Add the evaporated milk, sugar, and margarine to a microwaveable bowl.
2-Stir until smooth.
3-In a separate bowl combine the marshmallows, pecans/walnuts, chocolate chips, and vanilla.
4-Microwave the milk mixture on high for 45 seconds. Take it out, stir, repeat 3 times.
5-Pour the "stone" ingredients in with the heated "magma" and watch how it changes it. Then pour into a pan lined with wax paper and refrigerate overnight.
6-Enjoy. Yum, yum

  4. I love how you used making fudge as a learning tool- I especially liked how the magma melted the rocks! Great idea, and it looks like the kids loved it! :)

  5. Whenever I see your cooking with kids posts, I always think "I need to do that more." And then I don't. Just thought I'd let you know you inspire me, even if I don't always act on it. :-P
