Sloppy Joe Recipe

I grew up thinking sloppy joes were to be made with glop in a can. Looking back now, I can't believe I ate those sloppy joes. I found this great recipe a few years ago, and I have been using it ever since. I am not sure where I found it and I have tweaked it a bit to make it mine. Additionally, I just started using ground turkey instead of ground beef. I was surprised at how much we liked it.

Sloppy Joes

1 lb ground beef (I used the Jenny-O Ground turkey which is 20 oz and it worked great)
3/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup honey barbecue sauce
1/4 cup water
2 Tbs brown sugar
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tsp mustard
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder

Fry up the ground turkey and drain (if needed).

(There are times I will add dried minced onion in with the meat while it fries. If I do that, I delete the onion powder.)

The original recipe called for 1 cup of ketchup. I decreased it to 3/4 of a cup and added 1/4 cup of honey barbecue sauce.

Add the ketchup/barbecue sauce plus the remaining ingredients and stir. Heat for about 5 minutes on low to thicken the sauce.

I have also substituted the onion powder for dried minced onion on occasion. I will add the minced onion to the meat while it is frying up. I have not measured to know the amount though. I always shake until it covers the meat pretty well. I have also been known to chop up some green pepper to the meat and fried it up.

Serve on a hamburger bun.

  1. We like using ground turkey too. Sometimes we make our own sloppy joe sauce, sometimes we use the can

  2. I am so glad you shared this. We have been using the glop in a can and I haven't been able to find a recipe I liked. I am definitely going to try this one! Thanks for linking up with "Try a New Recipe Tuesday." Hope you will be able to join us again this week. :-)

  3. I would think if you're trying to go "healthier" then use raw onion and cook it up with your meat, much better flavor than onion powder or minced onion.
