Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen #29: Aa-Apple Crisp

Time for Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen
(A weekly linky where you can share your special time in the kitchen, such a great place for learning. You can also link up Kid-Friendly Recipes)

The linky is at the bottom.

For the last 2 weeks we have been focusing on the letter a and apples. We read some great books with some yummy looking recipes we plan to try. This week, however, I wanted to make something simple and tasty. So I went with Apple Crisp. Stay tuned for some more great recipes though, homemade applesauce, apple muffins, applesauce cake and then some apple pie for Thanksgiving.

Gotta love apples!

I am not sure where I found this recipe as I have been using it for a while, but it seems to be a pretty basic Apple Crisp recipe.

Ingredients:

Filling:
10 cups peeled, cored and sliced apples
1 cup white sugar
1 Tbs flour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 water

Topping:
1 cup quick-cooking oats
1 cup flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup butter, melted

Mommy started by slicing the apples, then I had the girls join me.

These are the filling ingredients.

These are the topping ingredients.

Adding the sugar to the apples.

Then we added the tablespoon of flour and the cinnamon and then we stirred.

We poured the apples into a 9x13 pan and poured the water over the top.

Amelia wanted a turn to level the flour, so I let her do that and add it to the oats in the bowl.

Then she added the brown sugar. And I added the baking powder and baking soda.

Of course, mommy melted the butter and added it.

Then it was time to stir again.

Then Amelia helped me add the topping to the pan.

Ready to go in the oven. Unfortunately we had to wait until after supper cooked as daddy had to work.

We baked it in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes.

I think they may be excited about the dessert.

So was I. Of course, we had to have Cool Whip.

Directions:

1- Peel, core, and slice the apples. Put them in a large bowl and stir in the sugar, flour, and cinnamon.
2- Pour the coated apples into a 9in x 13in baking pan. Then pour in the water.
3- Melt the butter. We melt it in the microwave.
4- While the butter is melting, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and baking soda in the large bowl.
5- Add the melted butter (a parent's job), and stir. Pour the topping onto the top of the apples in the pan.
6- Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
7- Cool for as long as you can stand to wait for the yumminess. Then enjoy with (or without) cool whip.

  1. My twins are starting to get to that age where they want to help mommy in the kitchen. We made cookies not long ago and they were in there "helping". Thank you for sharing this recipe, this is one I liked as a kid. My mom made it a lot, but I have never had the recipe myself to make it for my kids.
