School Time: Rainbows

Rainbow Fun: Snacks, Activities, and More!

This week we finally got to our rainbow unit. We started out with a "Colors of the Rainbow" Scavenger Hunt while we took a walk to the post office.

Orange

(Do you see the bumble bee?)

Rainbows

They colored a rainbow picture.

And then ate their rainbow muffin tin.

On Thursday we had Rainbow Pancakes. I found these on Pinterest and was led to the blog The Art of Doing Stuff where the blog author gives some great tips to make them turn out right.  I thought it would be cute to add whipped cream for a cloud.

And we made our Rainbow Fruit Pizza that I shared in this week's Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen.

And I finally got to have the girls try out a new activity I thought of a while ago.
Some more color matching with some fine motor skills and counting thrown in while they thread beads on pipe cleaners to make a rainbow.

(If you are wondering, Amelia was counting. In this picture she is saying "four.")

And look, Hannah can thread too.

Amelia wanted to color a dinosaur, so daddy printed out a dinosaur coloring page for each of them. I told the girls they had to incorporate rainbows into their pictures somehow (and yes, I used the word "incorporate").

We didn't get to all the rainbow books I took out, but the two we read were really good.

We read Duckie's Rainbow by Frances Barry.
Duckie's Rainbow. Frances Barry

This book is so cute. Each page focuses on one color of the rainbow as Duckie hurries home to avoid the rain. As you turn the page you are making one more arch of the rainbow which is then complete at the end of the story.

Our second book is Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert.
Planting a Rainbow
This is a great book for spring, rainbows and gardening. You learn that a garden will be composed of flowers that come from seeds and bulbs, in addition to seedlings. They choose flowers of each color of the rainbow and we get to learn lots of names of flowers. At the end we have a rainbow colored bouquet.
