School Time Week 25: The part with the Art Lessons

This week was supposed to be our week to conclude the letter F.  I have actually not been spending as much time on letter/sound activities lately.  We have our words of the week, but we haven't been doing as many projects that focus on our letters.  Tabitha knows all her letters and sounds, Amelia knows all her letters, though she is still learning the sounds.  I've been trying to think of some other things to do with the girls and was thrilled when I found this free online art lesson course over at Painted Pineapple.  We spent a few days this week working on color this week.  We learned about primary colors, secondary colors, warm colors and cool colors. We spent a lot of time mixing colors and painting.

For this first activity we painted half a paper with primary colors

Then we folded it over 

The one problem with this approach was that if the colors are only in specific spots when the paper is folded over it is not going to mix.  They got nice paintings of symmetry though.  So I let them paint differently on both sides and then fold it over so the colors would mix.

I think we all loved the string painting:

I loved that Tabitha's turned out looking like a cat, because our book we focused on this week was Mouse Paint  by Ellen Stoll Walsh and there is a cat in the book.

I traced and cut out some mice so we could "act out" the story.

Here the girls are painting on different parts of the paper each color, just like the mice did in the book, making sure to leave some white so the mice can hide from the cat.

Our next project was a color wheel.

We were supposed to glue it to the paper, but Tabitha wanted to be able to spin it like the wheel of color they saw at the Bubble Trouble show I posted about last week.

And then we did some drip painting.
