V lessons

 We have been working on Vv for a few weeks now, not that we do much each week with the little one.  Our words for the word cards were: van, valley, vacuum, vest, vegetables and violin.  Their grandma plays violin, how I wish I could have had her come down and bring her violin for the girls to see and hear.  We do have a violin episode of Elmo's world recorded.  Unfortunately we only watched it once because the girls preferred other episodes (feet and fast & slow), and we were watching Signing Time a lot too.  In fact today Tabitha was watching an episode while I was cleaning up in the kitchen and she ran in to show me how to do each new sign she was introduced to.

On to the V projects.  I got this idea when I was over at Michelle's site, Delightful Learning.  A while ago she had her son make a V out of Velcro.  I drew a large V on violet (purple) paper and had the girls lay the Velcro down on it.

Then they attached small pieces of Velcro to smaller versions of the word card pictures that I printed out along with some violet Vs I had typed out in different fonts.

As a follow-up activity the girls are able to take the pictures off and put them back on after discussing them/saying what the pictures are.

Then we made a Velcro collage.  I had planned on making them different sizes and shapes, but that didn't really happen.

For our V letter/sound books we made a vine.  I swirled on some white glue and the girls sort of helped me lay on the green yarn.  Then they glued on the leaves.

I had seen this V vase on a couple of different sites and decided it looked really cute.  So here is our version.

I had an old purple gift bag that I cut in a sort of slanted shape.  I then traced the V shape from the strips of paper and the girls glued them on and colored them.  Then we added construction paper stems and foam flowers.

As my son was out of school two weeks early, because for some reason in this school seniors get out earlier, I gave him a job to do one day.  He drew lots of letters on our front walk and took the girls out to have them throw/place bean bags on the Vs.

Then we washed the letters off and, after it dried, went back out to "chalk on the sidewalk" as Tabitha says.

We also played an Octopus dominoes game I found a while ago at the thrift shop.  The cards are two sided, one side has the traditional dots, the other side (the side we used) has colors that are to be matched up to make the octopuses tentacles.  I do not have the instructions, so we made up rules.  We took turns drawing a card.  We could either start a new tentacle or match one of the colors if possible.  If we matched a card that had a hand, we were done with that tentacle.  If we drew a card we couldn't match we held on to it; if it could be played the next turn it was played, if not a new card was drawn.  The person with the least cards when no more could be played won.

I forget when exactly we did this, but I decided to give the girls a number lunch:

1 cup of milk

2 green beans

3 strips of cheese

4 quarters of a sandwich

5 goldfish
