Kids and a Mom in the Kitchen: Cranberry Bread

This week we read the book Cranberry Thanksgiving. At the end of the book there is a recipe for cranberry bread, so I thought it would be fun to make something new for our Thanksgiving meal.

Amelia was saying she wanted to read the recipe like Tabitha does. So in the morning I made some ingredient cards just for her to "read" to me.  She knows her letters and sounds, but is not quite there when it comes to blending them into words. Granted a lot of the words in this recipe can not be sounded out, but she enjoyed trying. And as she read the word I gathered the ingredients.

And I stored them in a cute little basket to make it special.

Here is the recipe:

(from the back of Cranberry Thanksgiving)

2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp grated orange peel
3/4 cup orange juice
1 1/2 cups light raisins
1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries, chopped
(we used fresh)

Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda into a large bowl.
Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly.
Add egg, orange juice and orange peel.
Stir just until mixture is evenly moist.
Fold in raisins and cranberries.
Spoon into greased loaf pan. Bake at 350 for 1 hr 10 min.

Then Tabitha read the amount of each ingredient we needed as we added it to the bowl.

They are becoming quite independent, wanting to measure the ingredients themselves. Which I try to let them do.

All ready to go in the oven.
